Termite Fumigation: What You Need to Know

Whole-Home Defense from the Inside Out

Termite infestations can cause serious structural damage if not addressed quickly. Among the available treatment options, fumigation remains one of the most effective solutions for eliminating termites throughout an entire structure. Here’s what you need to know about termite fumigation, including how it works and what to expect during the process.

What Is Termite Fumigation?

Termite fumigation is a specialized pest control method used to eliminate drywood and other difficult-to-reach termite infestations. The process involves sealing the structure (commonly called "tenting") and releasing a fumigant gas that penetrates deep into walls, floors, and ceilings—targeting termites where they live and breed. This gas is lethal to termites but leaves no residue once the process is complete.

How Termite Fumigation Works

The fumigation process typically involves four key steps:

1. Preparation

Before fumigation begins, the property must be prepared.

This includes:

  • Vacating the property (people and pets)
  • Removing indoor plants and food items not in sealed containers
  • Coordinating with your pest control provider for specific prep instructions

2. Tenting

Large tarps are secured around the entire structure to create an airtight seal. This containment ensures the fumigant gas stays concentrated and effective throughout the treatment area.

3. Fumigation

Once sealed, the fumigant gas is released into the structure and allowed to circulate for 24–48 hours. During this time, it penetrates even the hardest-to-reach areas, ensuring complete extermination of termites and their colonies.

4. Aeration

After fumigation, the tarps are removed, and the property is thoroughly ventilated to remove any remaining gas. Doors and windows are opened, and specialized equipment may be used to accelerate air exchange. Reentry is only allowed once the property is tested and confirmed safe.

What To Expect During Termite Fumigation

Fumigation is a temporary but necessary disruption. Here’s what you should plan for:

  • You’ll need to vacate your home for 24–48 hours
  • Arrange alternative accommodations during this time
  • Remove pets, plants, and any items that could be sensitive to gas exposure
  • Your pest control provider will guide you through a full preparation checklist

Once the fumigation is complete and your home is cleared for reentry, you can return to a termite-free property with long-lasting peace of mind.
